JEN CONFERENCE 2013

Hola todos,

Solo quería decirles que me acaba de llegar una invitación para presentar en la Conferencia de el Jazz Education Network (JEN) 2013 en Atlanta, Georgia. Es un gran honor y estoy super emocionado con esta oportunidad. El título de mi charla es: Herramientas Efectivas para Componer/Arreglar usando Finale.

Ya les dejaré saber más cuando se vaya acercando el momento.

I'M BACK! - AQUI DE NUEVO!

Aquí estoy de nuevo. He estado medio inactivo en cuanto al blog se refiere pero espero poder publicar más frecuentemente a partir de ahora.

NUEVAS PIEZAS Y ALGO MAS

Hola,

La semana pasada fué bien emocionante! Mi pieza "Keep Your Dragon on a Leash" (algo asi como "Mantén tu Dragón Amarrado"), que había sido seleccionada como la pieza ganadora del UNC Jazz Composition Contest (categoría doctoral), fué tocada por la UNC Jazz Lab 1. Lo hicieron tremendamente bien!! Es una pieza dificil de tocar pero ellos hicieron un gran trabajo. Fue conducida por Dana Landry.

El titulo... no, no viene de una película o libro. El "Dragón," de mi punto de vista, se refiere a la manera en que mucha gente te quiere desanimar de hacer lo que estas soñando hacer, tan pronto les mencionas de tus planes. Asi que yo digo “guárdatelo para tí” (amarrado) y dejame seguir mi camino y hacer lo que siento que quiero hacer.

En otra nota, (Bb)… -chiste–, también subí una pieza para orquesta de jazz, “Mi Point of View” (Mi Punto de Vista). Esta grabación fué de un concierto de la Nashville Jazz Orchestra, conducida por un servidor hace un par de años. Puedes escucharla en este link:

Dicho sea de paso, esta pieza también ganó el UNC Jazz Composition Contest en 2009-2010.

También subí una de las piezas de mi album “Sueños” titulada “Vuelo de Pegaso.” Esta pieza cabe más en la categoría de fusion (Rock/Jazz). Escúchala en:

NEW MUSIC AND STUFF

Hi all,


Last week was really exciting! My piece "Keep Your Dragon on a Leash," that had been previously selected as the winner of the UNC Jazz Composition Contest (Doctoral category), was performed by  UNC Jazz Lab I. A great performance! It is a hard piece to perform but they did a great job with it. Dana Landry conducted it.
The title... nope, it did not come from a movie or book. The "Dragon," from my point of view, refers to the way many people want to discourage you from doing what you are dreaming of doing, as soon as you talk about it. So, what I say is "just keep it to yourself"(on a leash) and let me follow my path and do what I feel I want to do.
On another note (Bb)...–joke–, I also uploaded a piece for jazz orchestra, "My Point of View." This recording was a performance by the Nashville Jazz Orchestra, conducted by yours truly a couple of years ago. You can listen to it here:

By the way, this piece also won the UNC Jazz Composition Contest in 2009-2010.

MIS EXPERIENCIAS EN LA CONFERENCIA DEL JEN (JAZZ EDUCATION NETWORK)

Este es mi primer blog y me gustaría compartir mis experiencias en la conferencia del JEN, hace un par de semanas.

Fue grandioso estar allí para estrenar mi pieza "Heads or Tails," ganadora del concurso de composición de JEN (hubo 5 piezas más seleccionadas incluyendo una de mi amiga de UNC Kate Skinner, quien la cantó maravillosamente). Mi pieza fue tocada el Sábado por músicos de la extraordinaria orquesta de jazz de Alan Baylock, dirigida por un servidor. Fué "aperísimo"!!!

Trabajar con Alan fué muy divertido y él es muy profesional. La orquesta es grandiosa. Chequeenla!!!

Mis agradecimientos para el Sr. Paris Rutherford que organiza esta parte del evento. 

Tambié fué grandioso conocer y compartir con tanta gente que comparte el mismo amor por el jazz, lo cual se sentía en el aire.

Cada día habían muchas, y quiero decir MUCHAS, bandas e increibles músicos para disfrutar. Habían tantas que coincidian al mismo tiempo que tuve que perderme muchas... lamentablemente, aun no podemos estar en más de un sitio a la vez.

Me encontré con viejos amigos después de años de no verlos, como el extraordinario guitarrista Dr. Shawn Purcell y su encantadora esposa y tremenda cantante, Darden, y con el gran compositor y trompetista de jazz Jamey Simmons, quien fué mi profesor en MTSU. 

Hubo un momento casi surrealista cuando yo estaba hablando con Jamey, mi antiguo profesor, y con David Caffey, mi profesor actual, fue chulisimo!!!!
Pue bien, volviendo a los grandes músicos y bandas: me encantó ver la Afro-Bop Alliance, dirigida por Joe McCarthy, grandiosa banda de Latin-Jazz!! Fuí a una clínica de un gran guitarrista Serbio que vive en Chicago, Zvonimir Tod, eso fue increible!! Más tarde nos conocimos y él fué de lo más chévere, incluso me regaló varios de sus CDs. Chequeenlo, él es buenísimo!!
Entre otros conciertos y bandas que disfruté están Jack Wilkins and the Blue Green Project, the Miami Saxophone Quartet, con el gran compositor Gary Lindsay, el Dan Haerle trio, Danny Gottlieb Collective,Victor Wooten y Steve Bailey, Alan Baylock Jazz Orchestra, y muchos más.

Otro grupo increible es el cuarteto de Ken Peplowski/Shelly Berg. Shelly es un pianista sensacional y es sumamente divertido verlo en el escenario (también es el dean de la Frost School of Music de la Universidad de Miami).

Entre otras personas que conocí están Shelly Berg, Stephen Guerra (también de UM) tremendo compositor, y la Dra. Ariel Alexander, gran saxofonista y educadora. También tuve la oportunidad de pasar algo de tiempo con dos grandes del Latin Jazz, Bobby Sanabria y Rubén Alvarez. Ambos fueron muy agradables!!!

Para concluir, fue una gran experiencia, lo único que lamento, como dije, es que me perdí muchas cosas debido a conflictos de horario, pero es muy buen problema estar en la posición de tener que decidir entre 5 grandiosos eventos de jazz diferentes!!


Hablamos en la siguiente. Por ahora mantente en una nota alta (personalmente me gusta Bb en estos días)

MY EXPERIENCES AT THE JEN CONFERENCE 2012

This is my first blog and would like to share my experiences at the JEN (Jazz Education Network) Conference, about a week ago.
Of course it was great to be there to premiere my piece "Heads or Tails," winner of the JEN Student Composition Contest (there were 5 more pieces selected including one from my friend from UNC Kate Skinner, who sang wonderfully). My piece was performed on Saturday by musicians from the extraordinary Alan Baylock Jazz Orchestra, conducted by yours truly. It was a blast!
Alan was so much fun to work with, very professional. He directs a great ensemble. Check them out!! My thanks go to Mr. Paris Rutherford for putting this part of the event together.
 It was also great to meet so many like-minded people. You could feel the love for jazz music in the air. Every day there were many, and I mean MANY, great musicians and bands to enjoy. There were so many that I had to miss a bunch of them, but you know... you can't be in two places at the same time, at least not yet.
It was great meeting with old friends after years apart, such as the guitarist extraordinaire Dr. Shawn Purcell and his lovely wife and great singer, Darden Purcell, and the great composer and jazz trumpet player Jamey Simmons, who was my teacher at MTSU. There was a really cool moment when I was talking to both Jamey, former teacher, and Mr. David Caffey, current teacher, that was so cool!!
Well, back to the great musicians and bands: I loved to see The Afro-Bop Alliance, directed by Joe McCarthy, great Latin-jazz ensemble!! Went to a clinic by a great Serbian guitarist based in Chicago named Zvonimir Tod, that was a real treat!! Later I met him and he was very nice, even giving me, as a gift, a couple of his CDs. Look him up, he is great!!
Among other concerts I really enjoyed were Jack Wilkins and the Blue Green Project, the Miami Saxophone Quartet, with the great composer Gary Lindsay, the Dan Haerle trio, the Danny Gottlieb Collective,Victor Wooten and Steve Bailey, Alan Baylock Jazz Orchestra, and many others.
It was great seeing the Ken Peplowski/Shelly Berg quartet. Shelly is an amazing player (also Dean of the Frost School of Music, UM) and so fun to watch!!
Among other people I met and had a blast with are Shelly Berg, Stephen Guerra (also from UM) a great jazz composer, and Dr. Ariel Alexander, great saxophonist and educator. Also I had the chance to spend some time with Latin-jazz greats Bobby Sanabria and Ruben Alvarez. Both were really nice!


Concluding, it was a great experience, my only regret as I said, is that I missed a lot of stuff due to time conflicts, but it's great to be in the position of having to decide among 5 different great jazz events!!
